Finally, we’re heading to the beach!

Apologies for the radio silence. We’ve been busy making arrangements for Archie’s make-a-wish beach summer, and truthfully I haven’t felt like blogging. But I’ve got some good news. I’m glad to report that as of next week, Archie will finally be living at the beach.

This week we’re heading to Zihuatanejo, where Archie will realize his dream to swim in the ocean every day. I am so excited for him! And for us, of course. We’ll spend the next six months there—relaxing, working, and taking things day by day. At this point, we’re on Archie’s timeline.

Earlier this month, after checking out Melaque, we visited Zihua for a night and liked it. It’s a popular town, a bit bigger than what we wanted, but we’ll be there in the off-season, so most of the snowbirds will be gone and things will be nice and quiet.

While we were there Scout, Archie, and I test-drove the water. I was worried it might be too cold for swimming, but it turned out to be comfortably warm, even in the early morning. Scout and I used a discarded styrofoam tray to rescue a beached sting ray the size of a salad plate…his little upturned mouth grinned at us, just like in the cartoons. We saw more sting rays on the ocean floor as we swam, but they glided off when we approached, so we all got along just fine.

Three months ago tomorrow, Archie was given three-to-six months to live.

I can’t believe his diagnosis was so long ago. The first month was a painful blur during which we adjusted to the news and focused on re-homing Sophie (more pain). It took another month to get a plan together, and then we had to give a month’s notice. But at least we’re off now. And Archie still seems healthy.

Though we’ll miss Morelia and especially our friends here, we’re eager for this new adventure to begin.

I only know the name Zihuatanejo through the film, The Shawshank Redemption. I hope it proves to be lovely for all of you and Archie has a blast on the beach. Absolutely love the photo of your daughter staring out at the sea.

So happy for you all! I hope this is a wonderful, relaxing time for the four of you. Are there rats in Zihuatanejo? I sure hope so. Icing on the cake, right?

Hehe, if not he’ll have to make due with stingrays I guess. 😉
